Netflix Trial of the Century

Have you been wishing someone you knew had signed up for the Netflix trial so they could tell you if it was worthwhile or not and maybe let you borrow a couple DVDs too? Well, here’s the next best thing. I can’t let you borrow any DVDs, but I can tell you all about Netflix because I recently participated in the free Netflix trial.

Signing up was simple. I just clicked on an advertisement for Netflix and it took me directly to their homepage. From there I just filled out some basic information about myself and I was ready to go. I did have to give them my credit card number, so if that’s something you don’t like to do on the internet then you might want to reconsider signing up. Personally, even though nothing’s completely safe, I feel like it’s safe enough that I don’t mind doing it.

So there I was, all signed up and ready to go. Gently, I clicked on the “Sign In” button and was transported to a world of seemingly free DVDs…

Netflix Trial: The Low-Down

Upon signing up for my Netflix trial, I was immediately whisked away to a page with lots of popular DVDs being presented to, one might even say hawked at, me. There were lots of ways to browse the inventory. The immediate method presented to me was “Your Movie Spotlight,” which apparently had little to do me and everything to do with what Netflix thought I should like. Nonetheless, there were some interesting-looking movies there.

The next thing I noticed was a sidebar with many more options for browsing, such as New Releases, Netflix Top 100, Critics’ Picks (which I find untrustworthy at best), Award Winners, and then links for all sorts of different genres. Additionally, there’s a comprehensive search feature if you know what you’re looking for and don’t feel like browsing.

So after browsing around some, I selected three movies that interested me, because that’s the most you can have out at once, and queued them up. Netflix informed me that they would be shipped the following business day , and three days later I received my selections. I had the option to queue up more movies so that as soon as they receive one I returned (postage-paid, which is nice) they can immediately ship the next one out. It’s a nice feature, but I didn’t use it.

Ultimately, I canceled my membership after the free Netflix trial was over—I don’t watch enough movies to justify the Netflix monthly fee. But if you do then it’s a pretty good deal I think. I would say that’s worth trying out, if only for the two week trial.
